European Union allocates €2.3 million to bolster Africa’s fight against cholera outbreaks

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to combat cholera outbreaks in West and Central Africa. This funding aims to support Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials indicated that the resources will be used for treatment efforts, surveillance activities, improving access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a rise in cholera cases across several African nations in 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a notable spike primarily in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria is set to receive the largest portion of the emergency package at €1.5 million. This support will enable the expansion of intervention teams, the distribution of cholera treatment kits, and the procurement of other vital supplies. Additionally, the funding will aid in the treatment of water sources for public and household use. Part of the assistance will be allocated to enhance disease surveillance in remote and hard-to-reach regions. The initiative also encompasses case management, risk communication, and community awareness campaigns to help contain the spread of cholera in affected communities.

According to the latest World Health Organization data, 90,049 cholera cases have been reported across 18 countries in its African Region through June 28, with 1,528 fatalities. Nigeria alone reported 26,848 cases and 181 deaths during this period. In June, Nigeria documented 19,887 new cases and 97 fatalities. WHO reports that Borno State accounted for over 95% of Nigeria’s reported cholera cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno identified as the most affected localities.

Funding prioritizes treatment, water access, and disease monitoring

The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 to support case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The funding will also bolster disease surveillance, case detection efforts, and community engagement initiatives. It will further facilitate safe and dignified burials where necessary during the outbreak response. WHO data show 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country through June 28. The European Commission stated that this assistance is part of its emergency humanitarian effort to address the outbreaks in these four nations.

Cameroon is allocated €100,000 to enhance outbreak containment and patient care in affected communities. The support will cover additional humanitarian personnel, vital medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. WHO reports 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon as of June 28. Chad will receive €200,000 to implement water, sanitation, and hygiene measures. This funding will also support community surveillance and case management efforts. Chad recorded 109 cases and three deaths during the same period.

Nigeria’s surge fuels regional rise in cholera cases

WHO indicated that the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 countries in June, reflecting a 95% increase from May. The region also reported 284 cholera-related deaths during that month. Nigeria reported the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO attributed the spike in Nigeria to the outbreak in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, population displacement, poor sanitation, and increased rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe cases can cause rapid dehydration, necessitating immediate treatment. The EU’s funding will help implement strategies to halt transmission and improve healthcare access in affected regions. The total support across the four countries amounts to €2.3 million, focusing on treatment capacity, surveillance, vaccination when applicable, access to safer water, sanitation, and community outreach during the ongoing outbreaks.
