Germany boosts drone defence units and security infrastructure with plans to expand to 300 personnel by 2026

FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – Germany’s federal authorities are scaling up their drone protection capabilities amid rapid advancements in unmanned aircraft technology. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that counter-drone initiatives will remain a long-term commitment for the Federal Police. His remarks came during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday. Dobrindt pointed out the ongoing technological race between defensive systems and those aiming to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

In December 2025, the Federal Police established a specialized counter-drone unit to handle operations nationwide. The current team comprises approximately 70 personnel, based on latest government data. By the end of 2026, authorities aim to increase staffing to 300 officers. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has ordered a growth from four to eight strategic locations to enhance coverage and response times across Germany.

Germany has also prioritized counter-drone equipment at key airports under Federal Police jurisdiction, including Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government is acquiring mobile detection and defensive tools for use at these aviation sites. Due to security reasons, federal authorities have not publicly disclosed specific systems. Police are tasked with drone defence within airport boundaries, while state police oversee areas outside these zones.

Federal police unit grows nationwide following security breach

The expansion effort follows an incident on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. Federal prosecutors reported that a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator entered the airport premises. They found sufficient evidence that the aircraft was intended to cause an explosion. Additionally, a cargo plane collided with an object believed to be another drone in the wider airport vicinity. The federal prosecutor took over the investigation on August 6.

The Federal Criminal Police Office leads the inquiry under the direction of the federal prosecutor. Authorities have not publicly named any individuals responsible for the incident. To avoid premature attribution, the government has refrained from assigning blame as investigations continue. The case has renewed focus on safeguarding airports and critical infrastructure and has underscored the need for improved coordination among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations managing drone-related threats.

Germany launches drone security research hub

On August 18, Germany inaugurated a Technology Center for Drone Security at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. The facility also leverages research capabilities at the organization’s Braunschweig location. Its purpose is to test drone detection and defence technologies under operational conditions that simulate real-world scenarios. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs. The center aims to foster collaboration among researchers, security authorities, and companies developing counter-drone systems.

This new initiative complements Germany’s existing Joint Counter-Drone Centre, which manages information sharing and assessments among federal and state authorities. The federal police powers concerning drone detection and defence have recently been updated as well. Dobrindt highlighted that the rapid pace of technological change necessitates continuous development and testing of new systems. The government’s current approach integrates operational police units, coordinated security assessments, and dedicated research efforts to enhance protections against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones.
