Over 1,300 Cyber Vulnerabilities Addressed as Britain Boosts AI Security Measures

LONDON / RankWire.AI / – Britain is intensifying its defenses against the dangers posed by advanced artificial intelligence after pilot programs revealed more than 1,300 cybersecurity weaknesses. These vulnerabilities were discovered across hundreds of government software repositories. The British authorities stated that their initiative will leverage cutting-edge AI tools to enhance cybersecurity and pinpoint weaknesses in vital digital infrastructure. Additionally, officials are developing plans to handle severe incidents involving autonomous AI systems. This effort is part of a broader strategy to bolster national resilience as increasingly sophisticated AI models become part of public systems.

Britain expands AI security after government cyber trials
Britain expands AI security measures across government systems and critical services.

In two government-led trials, a total of 1,352 vulnerabilities across 548 code repositories within 18 departments were identified and remediated. These tests aimed to evaluate how advanced AI could assist in locating software flaws and detecting cyber threats. Plans are underway to expand this frontier AI fortification program across the government, with departments concentrating on addressing the most critical vulnerabilities. The initiative also seeks to develop the government’s broader capacity to utilize AI for cyber defense while ensuring appropriate oversight of the technology.

Britain’s AI Security Institute is actively testing high-level models and examining the robustness of their safeguards. Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanishka Narayan mentioned that the institute currently employs over 100 technical experts dedicated to model evaluation and security assessments. Their ongoing work involves testing systems such as Gemini 4 Argon and other advanced AI models. The government emphasizes that independent testing remains essential, as reliance solely on AI developers to assess risks from increasingly capable models is insufficient.

Expansion of AI Incident Response Planning

National Cyber Security Centre is collaborating with government agencies and the AI Security Institute to establish protocols for major incidents involving autonomous AI agents. These systems can undertake complex tasks with minimal human oversight. The proposed framework will assist authorities in incident detection, risk mitigation, and supporting those affected. Additionally, officials are reviewing how current cyber response structures can manage failures involving autonomous AI systems and advanced technologies in critical sectors.

Furthermore, the government is considering amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill progressing through Parliament. Possible measures include enhanced management of AI-related cyber risks, serious incidents, near misses, and loss-of-control scenarios. Existing proposals mandate that regulated operators and digital service providers report significant cyber events, with initial notifications due within 24 hours and comprehensive reports within 72 hours. This expanded security structure covers essential services such as hospitals, energy infrastructure, and drinking-water systems.

    Britain Reinforces AI Safety Protocols

Narayan highlighted that Britain must bolster its cyber defenses through independent testing and the development of domestic technical expertise. He also indicated that legislation might be necessary where current safeguards fall short of addressing emerging risks. The government has initiated efforts to support AI verification and intends to reveal further details in the coming months. Verification tools are seen as vital in confirming whether advanced AI systems operate as intended and whether safety mechanisms hold up under challenging conditions.

These initiatives are part of a larger government program examining the implications of artificial intelligence for national security and public services. The Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce is analyzing issues related to economic growth, public service delivery, employment, and security. Additionally, Britain has designated AI as a key policy area for its 2027 G20 presidency. The latest cybersecurity measures prioritize testing high-level AI models, fixing software vulnerabilities, and preparing government systems to respond effectively to serious AI-related incidents.
