Any reading above 50 indicates expansion. The final figure was slightly below the initial estimate of 52.0. This data reflects a broader sector improvement, even though demand remained weaker relative to the increase in factory output.
The manufacturing output index climbed to 52.9 from 51.7, reaching a level not seen in nearly four and a half years. Companies increased production despite only marginal growth in new business. Export orders declined again, with decreases noted in France, Spain, Italy, and Austria. While some member states saw improvements, they did not offset the declines. The gap between output and demand indicated that manufacturers still relied heavily on orders placed in previous months.
Factories accelerated the clearing of unfinished orders at the fastest pace since January, reducing the backlog of work. This reduction allowed companies to sustain higher production levels without a corresponding rise in new orders. July also saw manufacturers cut staffing levels once more. Business confidence improved to its highest since February but remained below the long-term average. As a result, the sector entered the third quarter with increased output, fewer backlogs, and limited growth in incoming work.
Export Market Continues to Face Challenges
Weakness in foreign sales persisted, hampering the eurozone manufacturing sector’s recovery. New export orders decreased across several key industrial nations, while domestic demand provided only modest support. Total new orders grew at a much slower rate than production. Companies fulfilled existing order commitments and reduced outstanding workloads to meet current output demands. July’s data revealed ongoing factory expansion, yet also underscored the persistent gap between goods produced and new orders received.
Despite ongoing disruptions in global shipping, price pressures eased in July. Input cost inflation slowed to its lowest point in five months, and manufacturers increased selling prices at the slowest pace since March. Longer supplier delivery times persisted, although delays became less severe compared to the previous five months. Rising energy costs and transportation issues related to Middle East instability continued to impact production networks, even as the rate of cost growth slowed.
Economic Conditions Improve Across the Eurozone
The uptick in manufacturing activity coincided with an overall increase in private sector activity across the eurozone. The composite output index, which includes both manufacturing and services, reached 51.9 in July. This marked its highest level in five months and signaled continued growth. Manufacturing contributed significantly to this improvement through increased production. However, the demand, export, and employment figures within the sector remained softer than the overall output index during the start of the quarter.
Eurostat reported that the eurozone’s gross domestic product grew by 0.4% in the second quarter compared to the previous three months. There was no quarterly growth during the first quarter. Inflation in July rose to 2.9% from 2.8% in June, while unemployment held steady at 6.3% in June.
